Switch off and support the World Wildlife Foundation Earth Hour

Would you like to help tackle climate change? You could be one of a billion people who switch their lights off during the World Wildlife Foundation (WWF) Earth Hour.
Earth Hour?takes place?on Saturday 28 March 2009 at 8.30pm and we would like to ask you to switch off your lights this Friday as you leave your building (where you can do so) so they’re off?during “Earth Hour.”?You would?be joining millions of people, businesses, schools and other organisations to demonstrate concern about climate change. WWF hopes that this will show the world’s leaders that we care about the planet and want them to act now to tackle climate change.

You can join in at home too – all you need to do is sign up with WWF and then switch off when the time comes. To see a short film about the project and find out how to join in, visit the WWF Earth Hour website.

Dr Neil Smith,??the University’s?Environment Manager, said, “We don’t want to see our buildings lit up at night unnecessarily. Most of our buildings have normal rocker switches and it is incumbent upon all of us to think and switch off lights (and other equipment) whenever it is not needed. Some of our buildings have automatically controlled light switching, which should switch lights off whenever there is sufficient daylight available or when there is nobody in the building, but if you are aware of such lighting not working as intended do please let us know by e-mailing efhelp@soton.ac.uk or calling extension 27474.

“Earth Hour is a great reminder to all of us of what we should be doing every day to save energy and money.”
