Dealing with interpersonal relationships can pose challenges for even the most experienced manager. Would a psychological approach help?
Employees may report chronic stress, or become the victim of bullying; both conditions sometimes lead to serious problems with absenteeism. What should managers do?
Psychologists use Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) to unpick issues surrounding stress. It may be traced to black and white beliefs among individuals about failure being completely unacceptable. Furthermore, if employees feel they are unable to say ‘no’ to their seniors, fearing criticism from peers and managers, overworking and burnout may be the result.
Workplace bullying is generally understood in terms of the interactions between the person being bullied and the intentions of the bully. However, it is valuable to consider past experiences of the victim and how they influence present behaviours along with an examination of the interpersonal styles of their managers.
Ambiguities and difficulties are inherent in power relationships. This seminar will discuss how cognitive models are effective in making these explicit and available for change.
