The University is launching a new multidisciplinary institute? the 天发娱乐棋牌_天发娱乐APP-官网|下载 Marine and Maritime Institute (SMMI). Professor Ajit Shenoi has been appointed as the founder Director of SMMI.

The creation of the SMMI follows the success of the Maritime Studies USRG? which has brought together a large number of academic? enterprise and research staff spanning several disciplines and faculties in matters dealing with the marine environment and the maritime domain, including marine engineers, naval architects, oceanographers, maritime lawyers and others.

The SMMI will also build upon the deepening links between the University and Lloyd’s Register. The ?120M collaboration between the university and Lloyd’s Register, which includes the redevelopment of the Boldrewood Campus, is thought to be the largest university/business partnership in the UK. Lloyd’s Register will move its entire marine division from London to Bolderwood to work alongside the University’s academics and students.

The SMMI will work across research, education and enterprise. In research, the Institute will work across the full range of disciplines, and tackle highly interdisciplinary problems in both fundamental and applied research. The Institute will educate the next generation of ship scientists, maritime engineers, lawyers, archaeologists and oceanographers who, with the benefit of enhanced cross-disciplinary education, will have greater opportunities to work with and for companies on real commercial projects.

The SMMI will work with companies large and small, providing consultancy and contract research as well as licensing technology. It will also provide training for continuous professional development for employees in the sector. The Institute will become a major hub for business – not only for the regional maritime sector but for the UK as a whole, and will have a major international role, collaborating with universities, businesses and marine institutes across the world.

In welcoming the SMMI, the Vice-Chancellor commented: “This is the largest such business focused investment in any UK university. SMMI must be forward looking and bring together scholars from a range of marine and maritime-related disciplines, delivering cutting edge research and excellent educational programmes that are of practical benefit to society.”

There will be a major launch event for the SMMI in Spring 2012.
