Artist Marcus Harvey in conversation with Ian Dawson at WSA Gallery – Tuesday 13 Novemver 2012 – 4pm to 6pm

To celebrate the publication of artist and WSA?lecturer Ian Dawson’s book Making Contemporary Sculpture, WSA?Global Futures invite you to a conversation between the author and?the artist Marcus Harvey, Tuesday, 13 November 2012, 4:00pm to 6:00pm?in the WSA Gallery (Westside Building, Ground Floor). The talk begins?at 4:00pm, followed by a drinks reception and book signing.

Marcus Harvey became known for his infamous portrait?of Myra Hindley, which came to prominence in the ‘Sensation’?exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts, London (1997). Since then he?has worked on large-scale work that operates between sculpture and?painting. In 2009 he recreated a portrait of Margaret Thatcher out of?15,000 plaster cast items.

Harvey’s commentary on the construction of British social and?cultural identity then extended into working with death masks of?Admiral Nelson and Churchill in ceramics.

Harvey also founded Turps Banana a quarterly publication discussing?both the theory and practice of painting written by practitioners.

In Making Contemporary Sculpture, Dawson interviews Harvey and 25?other artists about their practice. These artists include Keith?Tyson, Fiona Banner, Sir Anthony Caro, Richard Wilson, and Cathy de?Monchaux. It is a journey into the world of the contemporary artist,?a document that helps describe what it is like to make some of the?most exciting contemporary art of today. Copies of the book will be?on sale in the gallery.

We hope you will join us for this exciting event!
