Changes to TV Licence fees 1 April 2018

Students and staff should be aware that the cost of TV licences will change on Sunday 1 April 2018.

The Government is responsible for setting the level of the licence fee, and in 2016 announced that it would rise in line with inflation for five years from 1 April 2017.

From 1 April 2018:

  • A colour licence will cost ?150.50 (currently ?147).
  • A black and white licence will cost ?50.50 (currently ?49.50).
  • If the customer is blind (severely sight impaired), they will still be able to apply for a 50 per cent?concession. This means a colour licence will cost ?75.25 (currently ?73.50).
  • There will be no change to the free over 75 TV Licence.
  • The cost of Accommodation for Residential Care (ARC) concessionary licences won’t change. These licences are available to people living in certain types of residential care.

If you’ve already bought a licence on an instalment scheme which started before 1 April 2018 – such as monthly direct debit or weekly cash payments – you will continue to make payments towards the current total cost of ?147 (for a colour licence). Those buying a new licence before 1 April 2018?will also pay the current rate.
