Applying for a Defence and Security Mobility DTP Studentship

Applications for 2022 entry are now open

Do you want to influence the future direction of Defence and Security (D&S) or explore new or enhanced areas of research?

Would you value the opportunity to pursue a personal or employer-related research interest in D&S? Are you looking to make a mid-career change of direction or advancement? Are you transitioning between military and hi-tech D&S related civilian roles? Would a flexible balance between work, life and study enable you to consider pursuing doctoral-level research? If you answered yes to any or all of these questions, then we would like to hear from you.

The deadline for applications is 20th?May 2022.

It is not too early to submit your application as interviews with shortlisted candidates will commence as early as possible in Spring 2022.

The Internship for the entire first Cohort is planned to take place in the week of 4th July 2022 (TBC) .

How to apply

To apply to the D&S Mobility DTP, please submit your application via the university’s post-graduate application system . As part of your application, we are keen to build an understanding of both what topic you’d like to focus your research on and your background.? Therefore, as a part of your application please prepare a 1500 word research outline telling us:

  • what you're interested in;
  • why it is exciting for you;
  • what you have already read about it;
  • your background.

We will be looking for you to demonstrate your excitement for your proposed research topic, your enthusiasm for the opportunity to undertake research and your ability to communicate your ideas clearly. Your chosen topic should be in, or have significant overlap with engineering, physical sciences or mathematics. There may be the opportunity for your proposed topic to incorporate other areas of research that are linked to D&S and that are covered by research groups at the University of 天发娱乐棋牌_天发娱乐APP-官网|下载; for example, this could include disciplines such as environmental and life sciences, medicine or other social sciences.

Funding

The funding model will be mixed, depending on the circumstances of the candidate.

  • Fees: All fees will be paid by EPSRC.
  • Research Training and Support: An allocation ?5.25k paid for by EPSRC (administered by UoS).
  • Stipends/salaries: A limited number of EPSRC stipends (around ?15k pa) will be prioritised for returners to work, transitioners or SME employees. Employees of larger companies would be expected to continue to receive their salary from their companies.
  • Additional costs: EPSRC will fund the costs of internships; support for both cohort and bespoke training development and delivery; support for the facilitation of training attendance by students; cohort building activities, travel and placement expenses.

Entry requirements

Applications are open to candidates who are not transitioning directly from undergraduate or masters programmes to doctoral study. Applicants may hold (at least) one of:

  • a degree, normally with at least class 2(i) or equivalent, in a relevant subject;
  • a relevant master's qualification or equivalent;
  • evidence of prior professional practice or learning that meets the University's criteria and good practice guidelines for accreditation of prior experiential and/or certificated learning. Guidance is available in the University’s Recognition of Prior Learning policy.
