Current research
Written with librettist Vid Simoniti, I have I have recently created The Big Idea, a one hour monodrama for mezzo soprano Lotte Betts-Dean and Rubiks Collective, which will be peformed in Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra in September 2025.
With lyricist Harry Blake, I wrote Four Songs, for soprano Nina Guo and pianist Joe Houston, and I am currently working with Harry on a second set of songs for Nina and Joe.
Over the past few years working on a series of pieces called "Explorations in Polytonality and Other Musical Wonders". Each of the volumes that I have made so far features a suite of short pieces. Each piece investigates a technical approach within music composition (e.g., polytonality, metric modulations); historical textures (e.g., organum, heterophony); and historical forms (e.g. rondo, round). The project investigates new potentialities for these techniques, textures, and forms, with particular focus on approaches out of circulation within contemporary music making.

Biography
I compose songs, instrumental music and make theatrical works. I have several compositional projects: Letter Pieces are open score works combining physical action and music; Popular Contexts series combine recognisable recordings with instrumental music; performance-lecture works addressing aesthetic issues, such as Lecture About Bad Music; and Explorations in Polytonality and other Musical Wonders. Other pieces include:
- Electric Dreams, an opera I made as winner of the Johann Joseph Fux Opera Composition, which was staged at 2017 ORF Musikprotokoll, with a second production in 2023 at Grand Thé?tre de Genève.
- Glücklich, Glücklich, Freude, Freude, written for keyboardist Mark Knoop and the SWR Symphonieorchester premiered at 2019 Donaueschinger Musiktage.
- Minor Characters, a one-hour show written with composer/singer Jennifer Walshe for Ensemble Nikel premiered at 2023 Darmstadt Summer Course.
- Six Scenes for Turntables and Orchestra, co-composed with composer/turntabilist Mariam Rezaei, written for the Frankfurt Radio Symphony, Brussels Philharmonic/ICTUS, and Norwegian Radio Orchestra (subsequent performances with BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Tyrolean Symphony Orchestra Innsbruck and National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra).
- The Big Idea, a one hour monodrama written with librettist Vid Simoniti, for mezzo soprano Lotte Betts-Dean and Rubiks Collective, which will be peformed in Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra in September 2025.
I also write articles about music on issues relating to contemporary composition such as a paper on physical performativity in composed works, the notion of artistic voice, and an appeal for neoclassical values. I also co-directs the new music group Plus Minus Ensemble, runs a podcast called Soundmaking.
