Research project

Pre-App R2 2024

Project overview

My research addresses priority 1 and 7 of the James Lind Alliance for foot health
(https://www.jla.nihr.ac.uk/priority-setting-partnerships/foot-health/top-10-priorities.htm). Four in five women reported that health professionals made them feel unheard when they had a health concern (The Women's Health
Strategy England survey, 2022). Women in England live longer than men although proportionally women will spend a significant percentage in ill health or disability (Dr Gail Marzetti, 2023). The Office for National Statistics
(ONS) reported 35.2 million days were lost to sickness or musculoskeletal injury in 22/23. The highest rates of sickness are in women, older persons and people with long term conditions. The World Health Organisation (WHO) launched the rehabilitation 2030 initiative to draw attention to the profound unmet need for rehabilitation for all populations, across all life stages and along the continuum of care. However, the landscape of health and social
care in the UK is changing and women on average are up taking unpaid care roles (1.5-2.5 hours per day more than previous years), with less time spent on wellbeing and exercise (20 minutes a day in 2023 compared to 30
minutes per day in 2021) (ONS, 2023). On average women are also travelling further for paid work. Therefore, we need to establish how rehabilitation should be implemented to benefit women.
