Module overview

This module supports the academic assessment of your clinical and community placement experiences undertaken across your 12-month MSc programme. It provides a structured framework for evidencing your professional development through a summative portfolio of learning. The portfolio will include signed-off of core clinical competencies, examples of evidence-informed practice, and case studies drawn from your direct work with clinical populations. You will critically reflect on these experiences to identify key learning, challenges, and areas for growth, and develop action plans that demonstrate how you will apply this learning to future practice. Recognising that students may not encounter the full scope of clinical populations during their placements, the portfolio will also require you to consider how your learning can be transferred and adapted to professional contexts beyond your direct experience. This includes reflecting on how you would approach working with populations and settings not yet encountered, in line with CEPUK expectations. Throughout the module, you will engage with current research, policy, and guidelines to support evidence-based decision-making and demonstrate originality, creativity, and autonomy in your professional development.

Demonstrate a critical awareness and understanding of knowledge and current insights and problems at the forefront of your academic discipline or area of professional practice which may include current research, policy, and guidelines.
Analyse clinical and/or community placement experiences to identify key learning and challenges, and formulate targeted development strategies that apply evidence-informed insights to future professional contexts.
Demonstrate self-direction, originality and creativity in the process of undertaking the portfolio, including how you deal with complex situations.
Demonstrate autonomy in curating and critically evaluating a portfolio of clinical practice evidence that integrates reflective learning, feed-forward action planning, and evidence-based approaches to advance professional knowledge and practice within your discipline.
Critically consider how learning from clinical and community placements can be transferred and adapted to future professional encounters across the full scope of practice, including populations and settings not directly experienced.

Syllabus

This module provides a structured academic framework to support and assess your clinical and community placement learning across the MSc programme. It is designed to foster critical reflection, evidence-informed practice, and professional development through a comprehensive portfolio of learning. Structured Online Learning Delivered over several months, this component develops your understanding of research methods, evidence-based practice, and clinical reasoning. You will learn to critically appraise current evidence and apply it to real-world clinical scenarios, preparing you to work across diverse healthcare settings. Reflective Practice and Action Planning You will be guided in using reflective frameworks to analyse your placement experiences, identify key learning and challenges, and formulate meaningful action plans. These will support your ongoing development and demonstrate your ability to feed forward learning into future professional contexts. Portfolio Development Your portfolio is the summative assessment for this module and represents a critical synthesis of your clinical and academic development. It will include signed-off competencies, case studies, evidence-informed practice examples, structured reflections, and action plans. You will also demonstrate how your learning applies to populations and settings not directly encountered, evidencing your readiness to practise across the full CEPUK scope of practice. Supervision and Support You will be allocated a supervisor to support your placement journey and portfolio development. Regular contact with academic staff will ensure you are supported in integrating clinical experience with academic rigour, and in navigating complex or unfamiliar professional scenarios.

Assessment

Assessment strategy

You will be required to undertake and pass a set of core clinical competencies throughout your programme, via your course learning and your practice placements. This is embedded as a non-graded but 'Must Pass' component of this module. If you fail to meet the minimum requirement of competencies by the end of the module, you will refer in that component, which may mean undertaking a retrieval placement. You can still pass the other assessed components in this module and you will not be required to resubmit any component that has been marked as passed.
