Integrated Occupational Therapy Principles, Practice and Theory

Module overview

This module will build on your level 4 modules and will enable you to appreciate, and start to apply an integrated approach, to successfully use occupation at the core of all occupational therapy practice. This module will develop your ability to apply and link theoretical concepts that underpin occupational therapy with people who have a range of physical and mental health conditions, including those who are disadvantaged and marginalised. This module will further prepare you for professional practice by developing an understanding of a broad range of physical health and mental health conditions seen in practice. This module will enable you to justify and implement professional reasoning. You will engage in weekly case study discussions exploring a range of assessments, interventions and outcome measures with a mix of client groups.

Having successfully completed this module, you will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

Critical appraisal in relation to occupational therapy practice as part of developing your professional reasoning and improving outcomes.
How statutory and third sector organisations work together and analyse this and the unique contribution of occupational therapy within these services.
Local provision of health and social care services and gaps in service, exploring where occupational therapy can enhance patient care.
The evaluation and application of a range of occupational therapy and wider health and social care approaches, to promote diversity and reduce disparities.
Applying knowledge of key theories and occupational therapy approaches to develop a range of occupational therapy interventions.

Transferable and Generic Skills

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

Experiment with different approaches (e.g. therapeutic, education, compensatory and adaptive) to ensure effective working with others.
Apply a range of personal, professional and occupational therapy specific skills to promote high quality professional practice.

Learning and Teaching

Teaching and learning methods

The programme is built around the principles of spiral learning, utilising both pedagogical and andragogical approaches to teaching and learning. Throughout this module you will experience a mix of teaching modalities such as active and experiential learning, self-directed and collaborative learning, alongside traditional lectures and flipped classroom sessions.
