Module overview
Practice-based learning provides an opportunity to apply the knowledge, skills, behaviours and values you are developing at university whilst experiencing current practice in physiotherapy. Practice-based learning may take place in a variety of geographical locations, predominantly across the South of England. We group these experiences by the setting you will be based: acute, non-acute, outpatient and portfolio of practice (which describes roles across the four pillars of practice). You will be allocated a Practice Educator and supported by a University Academic Contact.

- Safe prescription of exercises, mobility aids and health promotion strategies.
- Development of professional documentation and handover skills.
Leadership and Management:

- Active participation in team discussions, recognising own role within service delivery.
Education:
- Providing advice and education to patients and carers with growing independence.
- Supporting peers and contributing to shared learning in the practice environment.
- Developing skills in self-directed learning and use of constructive feedback to improve performance.
Research:
- Critically evaluate research evidence to inform management plans.
- Engagement with clinical guidelines, protocols, and outcome measures to evaluate care.
Learning and Teaching
Teaching and learning methods
Prior to your placement you will receive a briefing.
When on placement your learning will take place in a range of practice settings, under the supervision of a qualified healthcare professional. You will take an active role in physiotherapy across all four pillars of practice, gradually taking on greater responsibility as your skills and confidence develop. Teaching and learning are experiential, focusing on the integration of theoretical knowledge with practical application in real-world contexts. You will have opportunities to observe, participate in, and reflect on a wide range of physiotherapy interventions across different patient groups and settings. Learning is supported by direct supervision, feedback, peer learning, and self-directed study, encouraging you to develop critical thinking, clinical reasoning, professional behaviours and effective communication skills. Reflective practice and ongoing assessment will help you to identify strengths and areas for development, supporting your growth towards becoming a safe, competent and autonomous practitioner.
Following your placement you will be expected to attend a cohort debriefing at the University, facilitated my members of the placement team.
